For the last decade, I took immense pride in calling myself a "Full Stack Developer." To me, it was a badge of versatility. It meant I could handle a CSS grid as easily as a PostgreSQL migration. It meant I was a "one-man army." But lately, something has shifted. I’ve realized that the term "Full Stack" has become a hollow box a checklist of technologies rather than a definition of value.

I am tired of being defined by the layers of the OSI model I can touch. I am tired of the interview loops that care more about my knowledge of Redux boilerplate than why we are building the feature in the first place. This is why I have officially retired the "Full Stack" label from my resume and replaced it with Product Engineer.

To me, a Product Engineer is a software developer who cares deeply about the "User Experience" and the "Business Goal" as much as the "Clean Code."

When I operate as a Product Engineer, I don’t just ask what database we are using. I ask:

●Is this feature actually going to move our North Star metric?
●Can we simplify this flow to reduce friction, even if it makes the code more complex?

A Product Engineer sits at the intersection of engineering, design, and product management. I’ve realized that my value isn’t in how many lines of TypeScript I write; it’s in my ability to translate a vague business idea into a functional tool that people actually love using.

The Problem with "The Stack" Mindset

The "Stack" mindset creates silos. I’ve been in too many meetings where a "Backend Engineer" refuses to touch a CSS file or a "Frontend Engineer" breaks out in hives at the sight of a SQL query.

When I identify as a Product Engineer, those boundaries vanish. If the user is experiencing a slow load time, I don’t care if the bottleneck is in the API or the rendering logic it’s my problem to solve because it’s a product failure.

My Journey: From Syntax to Solutions

I remember a specific project a few years ago. I was tasked with building a complex dashboard for a logistics company. I spent weeks perfecting the "Stack." I used the latest state management libraries, optimized my database indexes, and had 95% test coverage.

One of my favorite parts of calling myself a Product Engineer is my relationship with designers. In the old world, the designer would throw a mockup over the wall, and I would try to replicate it.

Now, I am in the Figma file with them. I suggest changes based on technical feasibility and common UI patterns. I understand that a beautiful design that takes three months to build is often worse than a "good enough" design that takes three days because the latter allows us to learn from real users faster.

The Technical Breadth of a Product Engineer

Don't mistake this for being "lite" on technical skills. If anything, I have to know more. To be an effective Product Engineer, I need to understand:

1.Observability: How do I know if users are struggling? (Sentry, PostHog, LogRocket).
2.A/B Testing: How do I prove my changes worked?
3.UI/UX Principles: Is the cognitive load too high here?
4.Performance: Because a slow product is a bad product.

The "Ticket Taker" is a developer who waits for a Jira ticket, moves it to "In Progress," writes the code, and moves it to "Done."

I refuse to be a ticket taker. I want to be a partner. When I see a ticket that doesn't make sense, I challenge it. This isn't about being difficult; it's about being invested. If I am going to spend 40 hours a week on something, I want it to matter.
