Kill the zombies. Use automated scripts to shut down dev and staging environments at 6 PM on Friday. If nobody is coding, the servers shouldn't be running.

Right-size everything. Look at your metrics. If CPU utilization hasn't hit 20% in a month, downsize the instance. AWS Compute Optimizer tells you exactly where you're wasting compute. Use it.

Fix your architecture. Stop using expensive block storage for things that rarely get accessed. Move older data to S3 Glacier Deep Archive. Put static assets behind a CDN.

Commit, but only later. Buy Compute Savings Plans or Reserved Instances. But do this after you've pruned the dead weight. Don't commit to a 3-year contract on a bloated baseline.
